What is Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Repair (FEVAR)?

A Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Repair, or FEVAR, is a common option for the repair of an aortic aneurysm that is close to, or involving the renal arteries. This stent is usually made to suit your specific needs. The FEVAR is a more complicated operation and can take between 2 to 5 hours to complete. You’ll generally have to stay in hospital for around 3 to 5 days.

The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthetic with two small 1cm cuts in both groins. The custom made device will be deployed at the level of the arteries to the bowel and kidneys. The graft has small holes, which deploys stents to connect the bowel and kidney arteries to the graft. Once this is performed the remaining three pieces of graft are deployed. This will allow your blood to flow within the graft and not against the weakened wall of the aorta.

The recovery from this is a little long than a standard repair. You will be encouraged to stand up around 4 hours after the procedure. This is still a major procedure and Dr Cohen will discuss the risks and benefits with you.
